I think there should be more freedom in the upcoming server. currently, the server is slowly turning into a school with too many rules. Although I have been away for a while (for these readons, and to play Skyrim XD), I still notice these things. some thing should be enabled, like:

1) nether portals. They dont work AT ALL at the moment.
2) TNT. suppose someone wants to make something big, like an underground city? you would have to mine it all.
3) Ender pearls
4) fire! nothing burns!
5) maybe claiming land for groups?

I know these things are disabled against greifers, but they are a vital part of minecraft. Maybe it is possible to enable it for people who have been playing over 5 hours, with exeption of anyone who is playing right now?

BTW, greifing DOES seem to have been receded. A while ago, I couldnt play a single day without calling for admins (who didnt react). Now, I have not been playing minecraft for about 3 months, and the NPC village I live in is still intact, and even bigger than before (someone else has been building on it).

BTW2, I hope that with the introduction of trafing with NPC's, everybody will come to accept NPC's and not try to kill them

1) nether portals worked the last time I checked. If you can't light them then you can always use a fire charge.
2) if TNT was enabled, a grief team could come on, get 1 TNT, dupe it and destroy the server. I have no confidence that TNT will ever be enabled to players other than admins.
3) Enderpearls, if spammed, can cause decent lag within e server. Plus they are now being used as XP storage.
4) once again, a griefing tool. Use fire charges if you really need fire
5) I'm not a residence expert, but I'm pretty sure you can claim land with ./res and allow certain people in it

I know they are a vital part of minecraft, but if you want to make an underground base, you can always ask an admin to world edit for you. They will be happy to help :

That npc village that your living in, I think blayde is the one upgrading it

When the next update comes out, I will personally make the greatest npc village ever and res it, and spawn npc's whenever needed XD + iron golems

Duping doesn't work anymore. I tried a dupe glitch on the server, (willing to put the duped items in fire/lava/void) for 1.2.5 that actually WORKED on my own server, and it didn't work on Firetop. Hopefully 1.3 will introduce new bug fixes and that is one of them.

Trust me, good griefing teams will find a way to dupe items if they are good. And considering that we are a cracked server, we are especially at risk to grief attacks
