Hi all, im planning to buy some new parts for my desktop. Now im asking u guys the good old Intel vs AMD question: shall i buy the AMD FX-8120 or the Intel core i5 2500(k)? I cant chose between these to, and internet isn't giving any clear information that says that one processor is better then the other and why. I only find Intel and AMD fanboys who all say their brand is the best so im not getting any further.

Maybe good to know: i keep my "old" graphicscard, an ati radeon HD6670 1g gddr5. My current processor is an Intel core2quad q8400. My current system memory is 4g and my motherboard is an Asus p5kpl-se. I allready found some good motherboards, so dont need help with that, only with processor choise.

The games i play now are: Battlefield 3, Battlefield bad company 2, Modern Warfare 3 and Tribes: Ascend (minecraft also, but doens't take so much system resourches). BF3 i can only play on medium, because i don't have enough ram, gonna expend that when i have all the parts...

I am intel all the way!
but I guess if your the gaming type you might want to go with AMD.

oh and I like your signature, so true

I completely agree. If you want a better graphics card for gaming purposes go with amd, if you want a good all around graphics card intell is pretty good

I would never pick anything but AMD. I am actually going to update to a AM3+ Motherboard soon for the new Bulldozer processor like you showed above. Though i was going after the AMD FX-8150.

And i would always pick AMD over Intel because of what i use my CPU most on. it simply it comes down too the fact that they are way cheaper for the power. And are also better for gaming. And when I render stuff I want my CPU to not be the bottle neck of the GPU. And i game a lot. Like Battlefield 3 and Crysis and need for speed. I need that extra performance.

Anyways, Thats my side of it.

I don't like AMD becuase it overheats easy, Depending on what you do, and if my server computers ran AMD I would have to find some way to cool it down

I have yet to ever have an overheating problem with my AMD Desktop. Actually, It's the opposite.

I have a Intel Core i3 In my laptop and I always get overheat messages on it, A few times it shut down on me cause of over heating, If you ever build or upgrade your own desktop. Just make sure you have good cable management to keep good airflow.

Allow for any fans to have a in-take of air and an out-take of air so it keeps the whole computer case cool. You don't need crazy heatsinks to keep anything cool as long as you have a overall well setup airflow intake and outtake.
Not saying Intel over heats. Maybe that's just my laptop design, but I am also saying that in a desktop. Its all about the setup. :D

They say laptops AMD or Intel are the ones you see over heat because either they don't put fans in or its because the vents are blocked

Some research will show you that Intel chips are always of a greater quality than AMD chips and have a longer lifespan. In reality, AMD started off as a company by making Intel's chips. AMD is not only cheaper because Intel is more popular, but also because their quality is cheaper. Furthermore, most game devs try to add native support for Intel/nVidia as opposed to AMD and Windows has been known as Wintel for the same reason. For example, a friend of mine has two computers, an Intel that lasted him 10 years and an AMD that died after 3.

I personally use my Core i5 laptop and don't ever get overheat messages. For perspective, I can play Crysis 1 on max, Crysis 2 on quite high settings, and BF3 on ultra (though I choose not to) without overheat. However, if you go with Intel, their integrated graphics are quite crap so you should still stick with an independent GPU.

Although i agree with the idea of what you're saying, Shadow, your conclusion is incorrect.

The reason AMD is cheaper is because they technology they use compared to a similar Intel is slightly older. I use strictly AMD, and i'll admit it. Thats why AMD is cheaper compared to Intel. This doesn't mean that its slower though, as AMD then takes their hardware and clocks it faster to help it compete with its Intel counterparts. By no means is the craftsmanship of AMD any less than Intel.

The factory overclocking has the byproduct of creating more heat, and thats where your idea of the AMD not lasting as long comes from i think. It's known that a CPU that runs abnormally hot will have a decreased lifespan. AMD is more susceptible to this, true, but this will also happen with Intel as well. This can all be mitigated by using a high-quality heatsink, or switching to a water-cooling solution if you plan to overclock.

wut? I'm not sure what that means, but just as a sidenote, AMD was the first consumer company to produce a 64-bit CPU.

What I mean is that most AAA games are partnered with nVidia and are thus better supported on those GPUs due to agreements and the fact that a lot of games also use PhysX. I am currently working on a game on CryEngine 3 and they definitely do support that. Currently, all EA games, Borderlands, and a many other mainstream games are partnered with nVidia.

As for the sidenote, x64 itself was based off of x86 and primary creation is irrelevant because being the first doesn't equate to being the best.

haha, i know it doesn't equate to being the best, i'm just saying that AMD isn't just a "follower" company

and as far as partnerships with nvidia/ati, it is true they may design the game to be "better" on that platform, but it is 95% marketing ploy to increase sales of nvidia/whatevercompanyitsdesignedtoplay"best"on

8g of ddr3-1866 ram
msi motherboard
650w psu
msi r6670 1g gddr5 graphicscard, which i allready had in my "old" setup.

peanutbrick will get my old pc :)

when the parts are arrived and installed ill post some pictures on the forum.

Thx for the good advice evryone!

He I got a ******** question

Do you like Intel or PowerPC

He I got a ******** question

Do you like Intel or PowerPC

This is an antiquated question, as PowerPC processors aren't produced anymore. originally, all Apple computers were PowerPC, and over the recent handful of years, they've transitioned to the point where they are completely Intel CPU's.

PowerPC isn't supported anymore by current operating systems, so I'd have to go with Intel :D

Ya I love my intel computers but the PowerPC was good for it's time

AMD.

evrything is installed, runs like a dream :P cpu temp barely reaches 45C without watercooling and the stock cooler installed.

pictures are coming soon, im still busy with all the software (including the software for my camera)
