WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

..Sorry. Anyway. Here it is guys! The next apparently-long-awaited entry in the EOD series! Except this one is in a completely different universe and is the start of a reboot! This crap took me two months to write, so you better read it or whatever. ..I kid, you don't need to read it. But I'd appreciate it. Jussayin.

PROLOGUE

"..infected with a seemingly deadly virus. Heavy casualties. Many hospitals are starting to become filled, as the sudden gas infecting the air overnight have made already thousands of people sick with a fever unlike anything we've ever seen before. This gas, is a substance that several witnesses have reported to have seen as they woke up early today, at around 6:00am. It is a hard sight, and I'm not sure if the camera is picking it up.. what's that? Oh. Yes, the camera cannot see the gas it seems. It isn't that visible, even if you were standing here in Starlight with me, where the virus has made itself known. According to our witnesses, it was more potent in the morning. It is unknown if it will spread far, or if it is already a sickness worldwide. More comes as the story develops."

No one believed it.

Not me.

Not my friends.
Not our parents.
Not even the news reporters themselves wanted to.

How could we blame them? It isn't often you hear of a deadly virus spreading like this. My friends and I never watched the news, but one day.. one crazy day. That's all it took. I remember it like it was yesterday. My mother called for me to come in the living room, so I did just that. Opened my room door, went down the stairs, and seen my family. My big brother, a 20 year old who had come for a visit, my parents, were all sitting in front of the TV watching a news report. About the virus. I remember every word of it.. it's been burned into my mind. And the other reports, too. My phone immediately rang in my pocket, just minutes after I came down. I took it out and looked at who was calling. It was my best friend, Ray. I knew what he was calling about. I walked away, and answered.
Click.
"Ray.."
"Connor. Man.. are you seeing this? Turn on channel 3. They're talking about something going down in that Starlight city."
"I know, I'm watching it right now. A virus."
"Yeah. What the hell. That's.. random, to say the least. What do you say about this, man? Starlight is a one hour drive from here in Freelight. I.. wouldn't be surprised if it came here, dude."
I took the phone away from my ear for a moment. He was right. Work began a long while ago on two towns, Freelight and Starlight. They were very close to each other, and essentially were the same place, hence the similar names. I've been to Starlight a few times, it's a nice place. They got this really nice park, I think People Park it was called. Just across the street from a breath-taking large as hell mansion. Freelight had its own few nice things, too. The Freelight Tower, for instance. Town's known for it. It went up real high up in the sky, and had a big clock on it. Of course, we had some nice parks too.
Thoughts came to mind.. well, bad ones. What if the gas spreads? It could get here. No denying that possibility.
"I don't know, Ray. I'm just gonna hope it doesn't come, honestly. I don't know anything about this, just that it's putting almost Starlight's entire population in hospitals. They don't seem to be saying anything about it right now, what it'll do. I guess they don't know either?"
We were so innocent. Not much of a care in the world, other than school. In fact, we were all only 16. When I say we, I mean my friends. Ray, the first. He was my best friend, I met him all the way back in second grade. We don't really do a whole lot without each other. Almost all the time we were at each other's houses, mostly me at his. But it was fine, because we were there for each other, we were.. ugh, I'm getting all sappy. He's my friend, alright? There were a few others, of course. The more important thing at hand right now is what's going on outside. The virus, it.. it..
Flashbacks kept hitting my head. Of when it spread..
"Yo, Connor. H-How's it hanging?"
"Hey Jared. It's hangin' alright, haha. What's up, man? It's been a little while."
"Yeah. Too long. Anyway, there's something more.. urgent going on, dude. You watching Channel 3?"
"No."
"Turn it on."
I was in my room, watching TV on the one in it. Another friend of mine named Jared had called. It was pretty early, I had only woken up around, three or four hours before I'd say, it was 1:00pm now. School has been out for a few days by now. It was already three weeks after the Starlight infection. There was an evacuation, and it.. it was unsucessful. Other military forces flew in, hundreds of squads of soldiers all in for this one op, one by one fell victim to the infection. The media is keeping any more details from the public for some reason. Since then, Starlight just.. fell. It's dead. The number of soldiers in the military dropped by a great amount, and they couldn't afford to go in again. They didn't even try to close it up, as far as I know.
I grabbed the remote and pressed the 3 button, causing the news to flash onto the screen. "..as soon as tonight. It's already been seen and reported by several witnesses to be in the city, but no one has caught it yet. We are advising everybody hearing this to stay indoors, shut your windows, and if for any reason you need to be out try to wear some sort of face protection. Gas masks seem to work the best. The reason for this is that if you so much as simply breathe in the gas, you WILL get infected..." the news reporter on screen was saying to everyone in Freelight within the station. She continued to say an evacuation will be attempted at around 3:00pm.
"Jared, what's going on? Are you still there?"
"It's here. I-It's.. it's here."
"Oh my god.. did you inform anyone else?"
"Yes. In fact you're the last one. We're all at my place, and we're gonna wait for the evac. They're going door to door, and they'll come, they'll come to this house for sure, and they'll see all of us. W-We'll be safe, it'll work. The evac.. wil--huh? O-Oh, yeah, I'm fine. I don't know, asking him now. Yeah, of course, lemme see what he says. Connor, are you gonna bring your parents? We all have ours here, too."
I simply put the phone down. A tear came to my eye, and my mouth just stayed open.
We went to Jared's.
3:00, nothing.
4:00, nothing.
5:00, nothing.
6:00, nothing.
8:00, nothing.
10:00...

CHAPTER 1: EVAC
August 30th, 2081
The 21st day of the infection
"Where are they, man? The news said, 3:00pm, they'd be knocking on doors, getting the evacuation going. But I don't see any of it!" Jared was pacing back and forth in front of us three on the couch. Me, Ray, and Jackie. Ray was around my size, a bit shorter. I was about like four months older than him. Jackie was a girl, again a little bit shorter, and actually her birthday was just a few weeks before mine. Everyone did say I was tall, so I guess that explains how they're slightly shorter than me. "Jared, it's gonna be alright man. They'll come. It's a big city dude, they might be making their way around this side soon. I'm sure that door will be knocked on any second now." Ray said, pointing in front of him to the front door. We were in the living room, the four of us. Parents were in the back somewhere. Honestly, we paid no attention to where they went. "Ray, think! It's currently 9:47pm. Almost SEVEN. HOURS. I know these kind of things would probably take a while, but shouldn't take THIS long! I mean, what, is there one guy going to each door? They should have like hundreds of soldiers in again like they did in Starlight! They should be READY this time, they KNOW what happened! But, no sign of it. There's no helicopters, there's no trucks, there's obviously no soldiers, there's.." Jared started flipping out.. he yelled at all of us on the couch, as he continued to get the TV working. Right, I had forgot about that. The TV wasn't getting any signal. It would switch channels and such, but no shows of any sort came up. Just one message, on each one. The same message, with the same white background.
"We are experiencing technical difficulties, please stand by."
"Jared.. don't think like that.. we'll be okay. Right guys?" Jackie spoke up in response, in.. almost a motherly tone. Ray and I simply looked at her. She just held on to that little bit of hope she had.. Jackie was the most optimistic person here. That's for damn sure. And it was nice to have such a happy person around. Thing is, Jared's got a point. What's going on? There should've been more.. well stuff going on. There should be vehicles going around the town, house to house. Should be way more progress in the evacuation. I guess it would make sense if it took a day or two, but.. nothing happened, for the longest time. No one responded to Jackie, and everyone just.. hung their head down, taking in the fact that they haven't gotten out yet. We should be on a plane, or some other vehicle, getting out right now. Hell by now, we'd already be somewhere safe. But they never came. The heaviness of the situation had only now started to hit all of us. Jared walked over to the couch, and just sat next to me, looking forwards, to the door just a few meters away. He glanced at the TV to the right, still with the same message. Then.. he just put his head in his hands, and sobs were heard. I put my hand on his back, and looked away.
***
10:14pm.
The message didn't clear from the TV, and we didn't get evacuated. It's been about 20 to 30 minutes since we realized no one's going to come. We all just sat there, and no one said a word. Our parents didn't come out. I've been thinking. Bad thoughts, though. Except they were likely. I had thought about what could've happened. The possibilities, why they never came. We aren't far on the outskirts or something, we're in the middle of downtown. We should've been the first to get out, I mean that's why they chose Jared's house. I stood up, and looked out the window near the door. But it was just too dark out, I couldn't see if anyone was there. I sighed, and turned back to the couch. If they can't find us, we should go find them, I thought... "Jared.. uh.. you wouldn't by any chance have four gas masks, would you?" I asked in a kind of awkward tone, as you don't usually ask your friends for gas masks. Jared stood up, and walked over. "Are.. you thinking of going out there? Into the deadly toxin, that DESTROYED Starlight in just mere weeks?" he replied with a very.. noticable anger. Obviously, he's mad. But after seeing that I want to go out there.. "Hear me out. The four of us go.. out there, right? With masks. Some sort of face protection, just like the news was saying earlier. We might be able to get out there without getting infected. And uh.. well.." I replied to Jared, in a soft tone, but trailed off at the end. What'll we do when we get out there? For some reason I hadn't thought that far. Jared shook his head at my idea. "Connor, man, we're risking getting hit by the virus. You heard what the news has been saying. Hospitals are full, everyone's getting sick. Sure, they're being vague about it, but they don't even know what's going on. If we catch this? We could die! I don't wanna die, Connor!" he replied, yelling. I stepped back. Suddenly, Jackie stood up from the couch, and looked straight at Jared. "Jared! You shouldn't be talking to your friend like that! In fact, I think he has a point. We've been waiting too long, and we don't want to be like what happened to the poor people of Starlight. At least we should be prepared, if they don't come tonight!" she yelled back at Jared. Anger still built up inside of him, anyone could see it.
Jared walked over to Jackie, and looked her in the eye. "I don't know what the hell's gotten into you people. But I'm NOT going out there. I don't even have any gas masks for god's sake. Why would I own one!? We go ou--" Jared tried to retaliate, but a noise cut him off. The door. What seemed to be knocks at it, got louder and louder, and the whole house could hear within just seconds. "..Er. Wow, I guess they came. Whoever it is really wants in." Ray said as we all just.. listened to the knocks. Jared didn't give a crap, he was practically dancing around the room! "YEES! They're here! HOLD ON ONE SECOND!" he yelled to who we could only assume was a soldier outside. Our parents suddenly walked in, smiles on their faces. Ray was right though.. they sure are knocking a lot. Hell, it almost sounds like scratches now. Jared jumped to the door and quickly opened it. Sure enough, a soldier stood there. But.. he didn't look so hot. He was kinda slanted over, and face a pale white. Red veins stood out like a sore thumb. But most of all.. his shoulder. Something didn't seem right about it, not at all. Something we all just looked at in horror.
"Excuse me, sir, but why is your shoulder missing?" Ray said aloud, as he just stood without making a move.

CHAPTER 2: LOCKED
August 30th 2081
The 21st day of the infection
The soldier walked in, slowly. Looking at each one of us. His shoulder.. Ray was right, it was gone. He didn't have a shoulder. Something else that seemed odd was the shape of.. the non-existent shoulder. It looked like it was ripped out, violently, and blood was still spilling out, onto his armor and down on the carpet. If I didn't know any better I'd say it looked like.. a bite. All of us just continued to stare. The soldier suddenly started walking towards me. His eyes.. I haven't noticed until now. They were bloodshot, with a hint of yellow. Pupils were tiny, eyes bulging. "H-Hey.. uh, let's go eh?" my father said aloud, noticing the soldier walking to me. He still didn't move, and soldier now stood right in front of my face. I could smell his breath.. it was terrible. Like he hasn't brushed his teeth in months. In fact, maybe he hasn't. From what little teeth he still had, they were all chipped, yellow, sharp like fangs. I started to get these weird thoughts at the back of my head. Of what he is. But.. I just shook them out and backed away from the soldier. Suddenly, he opened his mouth and let out a ghastly scream, at the top of his lungs, and ran at me! "HEY!" my father yelled again. Not knowing what to do, I kicked him away, and ran back. My father grabbed the soldier, and threw him at the wall. "I'm calling the cops!" another parent yelled, and pulled out a cell phone from their pocket. Jared's father made a quick run to the kitchen, and came back within just a few seconds with a big cleaver. The soldier jumped at my dad, making him fall to the ground. I couldn't move. I.. I tried to move my legs but I couldn't. I was just frozen in place. I couldn't move. I couldn't talk either. I couldn't do anything.. as I watched the soldier that tried to get me attacked my father. Not with a weapon.
With his sharp fang-like teeth, he thrusted his head forward and bit into my father's neck.
No one said anything. I.. I had so many conflicting emotions. Shock. Sadness. Anger. I had my back to the wall, and I just slid down into a sitting position, mouth agape. Only now, Jared's father realized what to do. He kicked the soldier off of my father, and thrusted the cleaver down into his chest. Obviously, since the soldier was wearing armor, nothing happened. He tried cutting into his chest again, and again. The soldier got up again, and tried to bite Jared's dad! "G-God dammit!" Ray of all people yelled, and ran to the soldier. He didn't make it in time.. and the soldier bit. He took the cleaver, and thrusted right into the soldier's head, making a huge cut in his brain. A squishy.. sound was heard, and blood squirted out from his head, onto the cleaver and Ray's clothes. The soldier fell limp. Ray took the cleaver out from it's head, and kicked it on the floor. I still did not do anything. Jared's father fell to the floor the same way I did, and my father was.. just dead, in the middle of the room. My eyes started to tear up.. I lowered my head, and just.. let it out. I could feel it, everyone was looking at me. But then, more tears were heard. I wasn't even sure who's. "Dave.." I heard my mother say, almost inaudible. "M... Mar...y.. I.. love.." my father croaked out, again almost inaudible. I heard a thump sound, and more tears. I could only imagine what happened. But no way in hell could I comprehend it. I closed my eyes.. and blacked out.
***
"I.. I can't believe.. what we just.."
"Jared.. man we'll.. we'll be okay.. we won't be one of.."
"Oh.. please wake up.."
I heard my friends talking, next to me. Other than that it was just silence. Not a single sound. I opened my eyes slowly, but without struggle. The first thing I noticed was a cement ceiling, with a light dangling from the middle. I was lying down, on something sort of soft, of which I'd assume is a mattress. "Connor! You're up!" I heard a seemingly happy, female voice near me. I realized it was Jackie, she had been waiting for me to get up it looks like. "Uh.. yeah.. what happened..? Where are we?" I looked to her, and asked. I couldn't see Jared or Ray. Turns out they were to my right, where I didn't look. "In.. m-my.. basement. I really don't want to bring up bad memories but, the soldier that came? He wasn't the only one like that. I think he has that infection. But so do others, a bunch of people came in at the sight of the open door, and the noise. But I don't even know if they were people, man. They came and.. they.. they.. th.." Jared responded. I looked to my right, seeing him and Ray. He was on his own mattress next to mine, sitting cross-legged. Ray was on a mattress after his, lying down. I couldn't really see, but I think the cleaver was next to him. "Yeah.. they repeated what the first guy did.. and.. ****, man, this is harder than I thought it'd be. We're.. the only ones that made it away. Jackie carried you down here, she said she doesn't wanna have you die or something like that." Ray finished for Jared. I could see tears well up in Jared's eyes. "H-Hey.." Jackie replied, probably because of that statement at the end. Doesn't want me to die? Well, that's nice.. I nodded, in response to Ray, although not sure if he seen. I wasn't sure what to think now..
CHAPTER 3: WEAPONRY
August 30th 2081
The 21st day of the infection
I didn't say anything after. I pieced it all together and realized for myself the situation. More people who got infected came, and, we're the only ones who survived. Survived.. it's weird, having to use that word. Everyday was just waking up, getting out of bed, eating, school, sometimes I'd hang out with friends and go to sleep. Normal life. But that seems like it's gonna change, drastically. All of our parents.. I can't think of it. I shook my head and tried to get rid of the thoughts. I knew that this day.. this day would forever haunt all of us. Especially them, who knows what they seen.
It was quiet in the basement, no one made a sound. I was sitting up, Jackie was sitting next to me, Jared seemed to have drifted off into a sleep, and Ray was facing the other way. Ray must be taking this the hardest, actually. He.. killed someone. He had someone's blood on his hands. And what if he had to do that to someone else? What if he killed again, to defend us? He only did what was right up there, though. I didn't think I'd ever see someone die like that though.. Images of the moment that cleaver made connection with the soldier's head rushed my mind. I shook my head again, and rubbed my temples. This day couldn't get worse.
..I thought too soon.
Clop.
Clop.
Clop.
Footsteps were heard above us. They were still here. I stood up, and looked around. Again, I'd only seen the ceiling, and some mattresses. Another bed lay to the left of mine, and a blank cement wall right next to it. At the end of that wall, a boarded-up door was seen. This must be where the stairs are. The exit wasn't really built that well I had noticed, as I walked over. Two wooden planks were on it, lots of duct tape keeping them on. It didn't look that steady. I turned around to see the rest of the basement. Jared and Ray's mattresses were there, with the back wall being behind all the beds. It kind of looked like a wide hallway, actually. A small shelf with a TV was at the end, off. I didn't think it would make much sense to turn it on. Three big shelves were on the wall to my left. I glanced at Jared, who was still sleeping, and slowly opened one. Some small pieces of wood and an almost empty roll of duct tape lay. Also, a red crowbar. Guess that's where the boards came from. I decided to take the crowbar out, and left it on the floor. I closed the shelf, and looked into the next one. Some cleaning supplies, nothing useful. I closed that one after looking for just a few seconds.
The footsteps grew louder, and closer. They were coming.. I didn't want to face them. There was most likely too many. At least, that's what I could gather from the footsteps. I opened the bottom, last shelf. I smiled as I opened it.. I had gotten lucky. "And.. jackpot." I whispered to myself. A wooden baseball bat sat in the shelf, with a baseball to accompany it. What looked like 5 ski masks also were in. I couldn't believe we found all this! I took the baseball bat out. It was a big, wooden one. Yeah, this could do some damage. All we need now is a hammer and nails.. some more damage wouldn't be a big problem. Jackie seen me holding the two items, and walked over. "Connor.. what are you going to do with those?" she asked, curious. I looked over at Jared who, still, was sleeping. Not like I can blame him. "We're gonna fight back." I simply responded. I said it a bit too confident, though. I really wasn't. I don't want to kill anyone.. but.. I'll do what I gotta do to defend my friends and I. Although that didn't help, thinking that. I was scared.
"You sure about that?" Ray suddenly said, and stood up. He had his cleaver in hand. I nodded. "It's the only way. I checked the shelves, there's nothing in them other than some cleaning stuff and this here. We aren't gonna live on Windex! Let's get Jared up. We don't have much time, but we gotta make a plan." I answered him, slowly realizing what I said after. A plan? I didn't think I could do that..
KRRRRSCH. RIP. CRSSSSSSSH.

CHAPTER 4: FIRST BLOOD
August 30th 2081

The 21st day of the infection
"Crap, you hear that?" Ray whispered, as we walked over. Scratches were heard at the door. They found the basement.. "Jared! Get up!" I said in a low tone to Jared, and his eyes shot open. They seemed to be a little bloodshot, but I didn't say anything about it. "Yeah uh.. everything alright? Damn, didn't even realize I passed out.." he replied. Calmly, finally. I quickly shushed him. It only took him a few seconds to see why. I extended my arm and handed him the bat. "Alright. We don't really have a plan. But here's what we're gonna do: First take down the barricade, and open the door. Yes, open the door. I'm gonna take the first one, and uh.. do.. the thing, with this here crowbar. Then, Ray, you take the next one, and Jared you take one yourself. It'll keep going like that in a circle. That way we get three at once. Now, when we get out of here, we'll have to.. find shelter. No offense Jared, but I'm not sure if we can stay here. We can go to my place, it's big, and we got groceries just yesterday. It's also the closest. Which is extremely convenient.." I declared to everyone, whispering the last part to myself. This was.. a very sudden change of events. I thought we were going to be safe right now. But all I'm thinking now is that we aren't going to survive more than 5 minutes. "You say that like it's gonna be easy. It won't. Keep that in mind. Other than that, sounds good." Ray replied, with a nod. Jared nodded as well. "Wh-what do I do..?" Jackie asked, obviously scared. Damn, I almost completely forgot about her. "Uh.. you just stay back. There's.. no other weapons, and.. well I'd just rather you don't be up there in the face of those things." I replied. Those things.. I just noticed what I called them. I didn't call them people. By reflex I called them.. things. "Let's get this party started." Ray said, and walked to the door as we followed.
In two quick swipes, Ray cut the tape with his cleaver and the planks fell to the floor. He kicked them out of the way, and put his hand on the doorknob. "You ready?" he asked. I took a deep breath, and tightened my grip on the crowbar. I quickly gave it a few swings around to get used to the weight. It was heavy, but I could handle it. I had put myself on the left side of the door, Ray was going to stay in the middle, and Jared was on the right. Jackie stayed at the back of the room. "Yeah." I answered. "M-Me.. too." Jared answered. Ray nodded, and took a deep breath. He pulled up his cleaver in his right hand, knob in his left. "Okay. Oookay." he said.
"3."
"2."
"1."
"Z-Zero."
Ray twisted the knob, and pulled open the door. Immediately, one of the infected fell on the floor inside. I grabbed it by the shirt, and pulled it to me. I put it to the wall so it's right hand couldn't be used, and my foot on his left. My right foot was on it's neck. Yet with all these precautions, he kept squirming and almost escaped my grasp a few times.. "Oh god, oh god." Jared said, lowly. I gulped. I glanced behind me, Ray had already took one out, and Jared was beating in the head of one he grabbed with his bat. I shook my head, and raised my crowbar. I can't back away now.. I brought down the crowbar on the head of who I grabbed. It went right in to the brain, no struggle. The arms went limp, and head fell. I pulled out my crowbar from it's cranium. I accidentally cut more of his head, and blood instantly squirted out and spilled. I stepped back, and looked to the door. No one was there. "C.. Clear..?" Ray said, looking away from his.. victim. I still had problems thinking with these words.. Jared was breathing heavily, and fast. Really fast. ****, I think he was hyperventilating. The one he took practically HAD no head! The brains and blood were all over the wall, and Jared himself. "Jared! Dude, you okay?" I asked, and walked over. He continued to breathe quickly. "Slow down man! Come on. Do it with me. Inhale.." I put my hand on his back, and inhaled. After a few seconds of struggle, Jared finally did so as well. "..Exhale." I breathed out, and went on trying to help him out. Jared exhaled, and took another deep breath. "..Alright. I'm okay. I'm.. okay." he finally said. I turned around from the door, and seen Jackie crouched down, sobbing.. Yeah, I can see why. The front of the room is pretty much painted in blood.
I walked over to her, and put my other hand on her shoulder. "Hey. You okay?" I asked, in a somewhat calm voice. She looked up at me, and seen the blood on my crowbar, still fresh, and dripping. My shirt had some on it too. "Y-Yeah.. sure.. let's go, please.." she said between tears. I extended my left, somehow clean, hand and offered to help her up. She took it, and stood up. I nodded at her with a smile, and turned back to the door. I never had a more fake smile. Ray and Jared walked out the door, and started walking up the stairs. We weren't done yet. I know there's more. Gotta be. I stopped at the infected I had killed, and looked down at him. "Rest in peace, you poor soul." I whispered. I know he couldn't hear. But I felt the need to pay my respects.

CHAPTER 5: CLEARED OUT
August 30th 2081
The 21st day of the infection
Ray, Jared, and I walked side by side examining the house. First thing we did was close the front
door. We couldn't find any of the things that came in, and we've been searching for about 10 minutes. At least, on the first floor. There was one more floor we had to search, and that's where we were going. I led us up the stairs, Jared behind me, and Ray was at the end behind Jackie watching our backs. A hallway greeted us as we came to the top. Two rooms on the left, one on the right, and one at the end. Another hallway was to our right, which leaded to the balcony that looks over the living room of the first floor. We could see the entire balcony clearly, there wasn't anything there. "Okay. Jackie, you stay at the stairs and yell if you see anything. I'm gonna go in to the one on the right. Connor, check the first room here, and Jared, you get the next one. We all go in to the one at the end together." Ray declared to us, setting up a game plan. We all nodded. "Okay. Ray, that room is the bathroom. It's small, so if anything's in there, it'll be a close fight. Micheal, you're going into my bedroom. I give you permission to look everywhere. Except, uh, the shelves." Jared added on to Ray's statement. We all stood in front of our doors, and opened them
in unison. They seemed to already be a bit open, however..
"****!" Ray immediately yelled, we all turned to him to see his hand holding a cleaver that just so happens to be in the middle of an infected's head. "C-Clear." he followed up. "Jared, I'll come in here with you." Ray followed Jared into the other room. I walked inside Jared's bedroom, making sure to keep the door wide open. I raised my crowbar in a fighting position, and walked slowly. A big shelf like the one seen in the basement was on the wall to my right, with a TV next to it. On my left was a desk, with a holographic laptop and a chair. A bed was next to the desk, and I think another shelf was on the other side of it, but a small one. I couldn't see the other side of the bed.. but I heard something. Moans. I tightened my grip on the crowbar once again. I slowly stepped forward. "Hello?" I asked. No response. I kept moving, and got to the bed. I took a deep breath, and hoped I didn't find anything. I quickly stepped over, keeping my eyes where the other side was. And.. sure enough, an infected was there. It was crouched over, facing the other way, eating something. I could only imagine that it was.. a body part, or something. I had a good sight on the head. I readied my crowbar, raised it high in the air. "I.. I'm sorry." I whispered, and swung down the crowbar. Again, no problems, it made connection with the insides of the head. It went in pretty deep actually. "CLEAR!" I yelled, and pulled out my crowbar. I backed away from it and walked out.
Jackie still stood at the top of the stairs, facing the room Ray and Jared went into worriedly. "O-Oh! I didn't.. hello Connor. They didn't come out yet.. and I heard a few sounds in there. I think they might be in trouble.. can you check? Please?" she asked as she noticed me coming out. "Sure." I nodded, and agreed to go in. That sounded a bit weird.. they should be done by now. I walked in the room. It was a master bedroom. It seemed okay, for the most part at least, there wasn't much out of place. A smaller bed was next to the probably queen size bed. But on the floor.. a red substance stained the carpet. By now, I had realized this must be.. blood. It led to a room on the far right wall. I walked over to the door, and heard what seemed to be sounds of struggle..! It was already half open, so I just kicked it open, and found Ray and Jared. We were in a long closet, and it looks like this is the other room in the hallway, there was another door at the end. But, not important. An infected was on Ray, and Jared just stared, in shock. I ran at the infected, and pulled it back by the shirt like I did earlier. I threw it at the wall and cocked back my arm with the crowbar, and seen who it was before doing anything. It.. was a kid. A little girl, to be exact. Jared looked up at me, and I could see tears. "C-Connor.. no, please.. no.." he didn't want me to do anything. The infected tried to get up but to no avail, I had broke it's already weak legs by throwing it.. I put down my crowbar. This infected was Jared's.. sister. If I was correct, she was only 4. Jared fell to his knees, next to his sister. The infection hadn't went through fully yet, her color was still a little bit there. Eyes were bloodshot, but veins weren't noticeable yet. She tried to speak, but only low grunts were heard. They.. still sounded normal. "Let's go." Jared said, after taking a moment. He tried to hold back tears, and we couldn't blame him.. I didn't have any siblings, but I wouldn't be able to lose my sister like that. Jared seemed to take it okay.. at least better than how I would've reacted.
He opened the door at the end of the closet, and sure enough we were at the hallway. "Ah! You guys are done?" Jackie said, a bit startled. Jared simply nodded, and started going down the stairs. Ray followed. "We.. seen some ****." I tried to explain without going into detail. She didn't need to know everything. But she looked over my shoulder and seen Jared's sister in the doorway, still incapacitated. "Oh.." she realized. I sighed, and walked down the stairs. "Let's go back to the basement. There were masks, we should get those." I declared to everyone, as Jared was looking out the window. I started walking to the basement, and Ray followed.

CHAPTER 6: SHELTER
August 30th 2081
The 21st day of the infection
Ray and I were in the basement, masks in hand. "So.. what do we do?" Ray spoke up as I handed him one of the masks. I looked to the ground, and sighed. "I don't know man. I.. really don't know." I replied, sadly. I wasn't lying, I had no idea what we're supposed to do from here. This virus isn't like anything we've seen before. "This is crazy. We just killed people, Connor.. I mean, Jared's sister--" Ray started, but I stopped him. "R-Ray! I... I know, man. Let's just go alright?" I replied. He frowned, but agreed nonetheless. We walked up the stairs, and met Jackie and Jared.
Of course, Jared still was trying to hold back tears. I couldn't imagine what he's feeling right now. I gave them their masks. "Put these on.. I.. I don't know if we can stay here. We're going." I said to both of them, but they just had this look of.. sorrow. "C-Connor.. look out the window." Jackie replied, and took the mask. I took a look outside, and.. there were people out there. No.. they looked like people, but I don't think they were. They just lurked around, slanting over, walking as if they were looking for something. I had a slight idea of what it was. I put down my crowbar, and put my mask on. Everyone else had theirs on, too. I quickly picked the crowbar back up, and turned to everybody. "Okay.. so, we're gonna get out, and we'll go to my place. It's the closest, as far as I know anyway. It's just down the street a bit, and around the corner. Try to keep your mouth closed when we're outside. We'll see from there what happens.." I declared, and everyone nodded. Jared readied his bat, and Ray gripped his cleaver harder. Jackie.. well, she didn't have a weapon. I put my hand on the doorknob, turned it, and opened it slowly.
Stench.
A terrible smell immediately was noticed. It smelled like.. something extremely rotten. I believe it came from the things, that walked around. I tried to get my bearings, instead of just throwing up everything I ate that day right then and there. We were at the end of a T-intersection, so we could go left, forward, or right. I always walked here and back, so I knew which way to go.
I turned left and signaled for the rest to follow me. We walked slow. The town was dead.. nothing normal on the streets. All houses had the lights turned off, and the street lights were out too. Needless to say, it was pretty dark. I wasn't even sure if a moon, or stars were out. Just.. darkness. I could only see right in front of me, and therefore didn't know where the lurkers were. Lurkers.. I smirked at the thought of that name, even if no one could see it. It was pretty quiet, other than our own footsteps. If it weren't for these monster-like things trying to eat us or the crazy smell, I'd say it was a peaceful night. But that won't save us. All I wanted right now was to be in a military vehicle of some sort, being evacuated to safety. With my family. Family.. I haven't even got to reflect on that. My parents aren't here.. they aren't back at the house.. they're gone.. I shook my head, and rubbed my temples a bit. I couldn't think of that, I was playing the leader role here it seems, alongside Ray at least, and I can't just break down or something, not in front of them.. I kept on walking, with them right behind me.
We got to the corner to the house, no problems.
'Till now.
The house was in our vision, and we were about to go in. But something stopped us. A horde. At least, that's the first word that came to mind. I swear, it looked like hundreds.. thousands.. of lurkers. That wasn't all. A tipped over car lay in the middle of the road, in flames. Blood around it. The lurkers seemed to be attracted to it.. there was no way around them, and, the house was on the other side.

CHAPTER 7: VOICE
August 30th 2081
The 21st day of the infection
I gulped at the sight, and stepped back. No. No way could we fight all that. Everyone else stepped back too. No one said a word, we didn't want to breathe in the gas obviously. I took a glance at them, and while they had a mask covering most of their face, I could tell.. Fear. They didn't want to do this. Jared even motioned that we should try to go around, but.. the lurkers, they went down for blocks, I don't even know where it ended. We were face to face with a horde.
"horde.."
The word horde repeated in my mind. Which was odd, I didn't want to do that. I took a deep breath. How are we going to go about doing this!?
"Helpless.."
Another word appeared in my mind. This wasn't my voice, though. It sounded like a whisper.. kind of feminine. A young girl, kind of.. It echoed, sounding dark and raspy. Nothing like Jared's little sister, whom of which came to mind immediately. What the hell?
"Your.. first.. trial.."
There's that voice again. The girl. Didn't sound very old at all. Who is this..? Why is someone talking in my mind? Am I going insane already!?
"insane.."
Insane.. it repeated in my mind, just like how "horde" did. I stepped back once again. "No.. No no no no no no.. no no no.. no... NO!" I fell to my knees, and clutched my head as a sudden intense sharp pain spread throughout it. I fell over on the ground, and my vision blurred out, to the point nothing looked remotely like anything I could recognize. My hearing blurred out too, I felt like I could hear something, but I didn't know what it was. I couldn't even pay attention, my head felt like it was about to explode. The smell of the lurkers didn't even come to me. I.. I started screaming. And kicking.
"You can't.. fight.. you can't.. defend your friends.. yourself.."
The voice started to speak again, it tried.. to put me down? I sure as hell can fight.. rage started to bottle up in me. I didn't even know where it came from. Could I fight? The question didn't come to mind. All I thought was..
"Get up, you little ****."
I said it out loud.
"Come on!"
I could hear my friends. I could tell I was being dragged. My eyes fluttered open, as apparently they were closed, and within seconds I could see just fine. They were following us, they were right on our tail. The lurkers.
Lurkers.
The things that ate my family alive.
The things that ate my friends' family alive.
The things that brought the end.
The things that brought the apocalypse.
My crowbar.. I was still gripping it tightly. I gripped it even tighter. My hand started to bleed a tiny bit. Probably the entire horde was coming after us...
I jumped up. I stood straight, and seen the lurkers coming right to me.
"GET SOME, DICKHEADS!" I yelled at the top of my lungs. My friends walked next to me, their weapons in hand. Ray to my left, ready to cut with his cleaver. Jared to my right, ready to get revenge for his sister. Jackie behind us.
"ATTACK!"

Somebody farted. Nice "DICKHEADS".

CHAPTER 8: REVENGE
August 30th 2081
The 21st day of the infection
The three of us charged forward, and immediately started swinging. I took one and smashed its head in instantly. I didn't feel sorry. I was seeing red. I was seeing the need to fight. I wasn't the only one. Ray swung his cleaver back and forth, taking out two lurkers back to back. Jared beat in the head of one that he attacked. I took my crowbar out and quickly drew it back, and right into another lurker. The horde, for the most part, actually ran past us. They... ****! "JACKIE! RUN!" I yelled, and pushed the end of the crowbar through another lurker. I thrusted it back, and swung forward and a large motion, and hit three at once. They all fell to the ground. "G-GUYS!" Ray suddenly yelled. I pushed through the lurkers, casually killing a few in the process, to find that Ray had a bit of a problem. One was on him, mouth full open, ready to chomp on his neck. I seen a clearing. I ran through, and literally jumped at the lurker and stabbed him with the back of my crowbar. "Sh-**** dude. Thanks--" Ray tried to give thanks, but had to cut up another lurker coming his way. The horde was starting to realize where we are. We were already in the middle of the horde. I continued our little massacre. I didn't even get to feel remorse, or comprehend how much blood we were spilling. But I damn well knew that my crowbar was filled to my hand with blood and brains. I didn't try to shake it off, or anything. I continued smashing heads.
"Yes.."
The voice spoke once again. I heard it, but didn't care much for it after a few seconds. I still had an intense anger to get out. "F--AUUUGHH!" Jared yelled, and I ran over once again. Of course, while staining the crowbar with a certain red color. He had two trying to eat him, they had a great grip on him from what I could tell. They kept thrusting their heads forwards, but Jared kept a cap on it, with his bat. I took one, kicked it away, and aimed for its neck. Swinging the crowbar forward, I managed to take the head clean off! I grabbed the other, and did the same. Jared nodded in response, and we kept on killing. It.. felt good. It felt good to take on all of these things, and.. well not be dead.
The end of the horde was in sight. It wasn't that far. Lurkers still were behind us, running for Jackie I'd assume, or just plain lurk again. If anything, these guys are idiots. The thought that we should be dead right now ran through my head. That was interrupted by me taking another one for the kill. Ray was getting a lot for himself, with that cleaver. He swung it around with a devastating speed, getting three, no, four at once. Jared had his bat going right through their heads, the top of them coming right off. Brains spilling out. Hell, their EYES were falling on the floor. What was left of them, anyway. Nonetheless, we didn't care. I could tell they wanted to do this. They wanted to fight. They had this rage in them too. I wasn't this psycho, who had the need to kill these people infected with the virus, I just wanted revenge. That's what I told myself anyway. The others wanted revenge too.. so we got it.
***
Ppflllsh!
Plop.
With the last of the adrenaline I was pumped with, I took off one more head. But no more lurkers came. I finally took a moment to get my bearings. We were around the corner we came, and the road was almost entirely covered in blood. My clothes were soaked with the insides of these lurkers. The crowbar had an odd wet feel. Of course, it was blood. I took a deep breath and looked at our surroundings. "Holy **** man." Ray said, as he looked around. His eyes fell upon me. Both of them hadn't come near to looking as messed up as I did. Their weapons were stained with blood, but just a few little spots of blood on their shirts. I was completely showered in it. A tear suddenly came to my eye. I started to realize what we just did, and.. what to do next. "Wh-what now? We gotta find Jackie, tons of those.. things still got past us, she could be in trouble..!" Jared spoke up. I took another deep breath. He was right, we gotta find Jackie. But.. it was still dark out. I could see the lurkers since they were right in front of us and all, but it was really dark still. It would be better to go on some sort of mission like that in daylight. And my house was right around the corner..
"You.. succeeded.."
"It's time.. for the second.. trial."
"AAAAAAAAAAUUUUGHH!!!!"

CHAPTER 9: HUNT BEGINS
August 30th 2081
The 21st day of the infection
Darkness.
I could move, but could not see.
I was in a deep, deep pain.. I didn't really feel like I could walk that well.
"James Kriesberg. You look like.. a fine warrior."
The voice spoke again.. in its echo, raspy, sharp voice. But not in my head, it was like she actually was there.
"Your dear friend might've gotten away.. who knows where she is now. But you will find her, won't you?"
Rage bottled up in me again. Adrenaline. The same from when we fought that horde. Why, I was ready to take on another one.
"The.. second trial. Begins. NOW."
"AAAAH!"
My eyes shot open with a yell, and immediately seen Ray and Jared at my side. First thing I noticed is that my adrenaline was gone again. I was lying down in a bed, a familiar bed. A light in the room was on and.. the ceiling looked familiar too.
I was in my room. In my house. Looks like we got in. After a few moments, I realized, I wasn't wearing my shirt. And my sheets, and blanket are off the bed. I guess it's because I was just dripping with blood earlier.. "Connor.. Connor, man, are you alright?" Jared asked. They both looked.. scared, and in shock. I couldn't blame them, as memories of the brutal killings of the lurkers entered my mind. But, I was physically okay. "Y-Yeah.. just really tired.. are we in my house?" I asked him, even though I knew the answer. Jared nodded. "You.. suddenly like, broke down in the middle of the road. Again. We had to pick you up and take you here. But what the **** man? Got an explanation for almost getting us killed, and seperating us from a helpless friend IN A GOD DAMN APOCALYPSE, ASSHOLE!?" he started yelling at me. Ray glared at him, and I did so as well. Rage.. again, I felt it. "Jared.. shut your mouth. NOW. Who do you think you are, that you're gonna raise your voice at me, in a 'god damn apocalypse' as you call it? What gives you the right to say that to me? I don't know what it--" I started to make a response. I was mad. I was angered, now. But I didn't want to fight.. "NO! WE COULD HAVE DIED! WE LOST JACKIE! DO YOU KNOW HOW--" he tried to talk. But I had enough.
I stood up from the bed, and cocked back my right arm. Jared stared at me. Ray knew what I was doing. "Connor, no-" I swung it forward, right into his jaw. His head snapped sideways, and he fell to the wall, blood coming out of his mouth. He slid down, and just looked at me. Wait.. huh? I made him bleed a bit. Now he can't even get up and fight back. Am I even that strong? I didn't think I was. Jared tried to speak, but nothing came out. He used my bed for support, and slowly stood back up. Ray walked over. "What the hell is wrong with you guys!? Jared, no need to get all hostile on him! Connor, who are YOU to punch him in the face? If we're gonna pull through and find Jackie, we need to work together. And NOT be fighting with each other. Now, I don't think it's a very smart idea to go out now, so I'm thinkin' we stay here for the night, and set out in the morning. First place we look is Jared's, I guess. She'll probably be at one of our houses, most likely back to Jared's since it's the closest. That is, if she's safe. But, I'm going to go sleep on the couch, Connor, you should probably change out of those clothes and you can sleep here, and Jared, you can sleep on the other couch I guess." Ray growled. I took a deep breath, and sat on the bed. They just walked out of the room, with no words. I.. I couldn't get over it. I punched him. I hit him. And it felt.. right for those first few seconds. What happened to me?
***
"You can fight for yourself..
Can you still fight for your friends?
Are they going to come with you, when you search tomorrow?
Will they go on their own, without you by their side?
These are questions you must ask yourself, Kriesberg.
But I assume all you want now is answers.
I won't let you have any just yet.. but know this:
If you don't pass the trials, I'm taking your brother, Miles Kriesberg.
Where is he, Connor? Did he come with you to Jared's?
Maybe it'd be better to find your dearest family member, he could be safe for all you know.
You only want to find the girl because she's your friend. But you should make a choice.
Friend.. or family?"

CHAPTER 10: LOST ONES
August 31st 2081

The 22nd day of the infection

My eyes shot open. Sunlight shined in through the window on my left. I glanced over and seen the nearby clock, saying 9:55am. The door was closed shut. On my right, the wall was just blank, as usual. I had changed my clothes last night, I couldn't stand being in the ones I was wearing. Had just normal pajamas on, but was going to put some heavier stuff on soon. The blankets and sheets were still off the bed. I stood up from the bed, and opened the door. I was met with the hallway leading to all the rooms on this floor, including the bathroom, parents' bedroom, and guest bedroom, that my brother usually sleeps in if he stays a few days or anything. And the stairs leading down.
Brother..
Memories of the dream I had the night before surfaced. I was in darkness again.. a sharp pain went throughout my body once again, but I could walk nonetheless. I didn't know where I was going. The voice.. that woman.. possibly a little girl.. she spoke to me. About my brother. She wanted to take him... why?
He was a 20 year old visiting from the military. He came back from his first deployment a few months ago. His home isn't here though, it's in America. His rank is PFC, Private First Class if I'm not mistaken. His name is Miles. Often called PFC Miles, or Private Miles by his squadmates. He was part of Alpha, a squad of which that was "one of the best" according to him. It had around six or seven members apparently. Really not sure how he got into, "one of the best", squads if he's just a Private though. He wasn't part of the evac operation, or anything related to the infection, as far as I know. Probably because of his low rank- they most likely want the best soldiers in. But, I still find it odd he wasn't called on or anything, most of our soldiers are gone due to the Starlight incident. It was too early for me to think of this though. I walked down the stairs, and got to the living room.
Sure enough, Ray and Jared were up. It looked like Jared was trying to get the TV to work again, but, no avail. "..Hey guys." I greeted them, calmly. They acknowledged my presence and nodded. "Hey. You're up. Jared and I already talked about it, said we should have something to eat if there is anything, and move out. We'll go to his place first." Ray responded. I agreed, and walked over to the kitchen, which was conveniently behind the couches in the living room.
***
We ended up just eating some cereal, and were ready to head out. I quickly went upstairs to my room and changed into some pants and a light sweater. I'll probably die of heat in it, considering it's August, but it's better than showing my skin that could get.. eaten. I had found my crowbar was still in the room, so naturally, I took it. Ray and Jared had their weapons, and we left, masks on of course. Already on our way to Jared's house. Lurkers were minimal. They, well, lurked around on the roads and such but we kept to ourselves and didn't attract their attention. The walk was quiet, no one really said anything. I just took the time to think about.. what's going on? An infection spread throughout Starlight and killed it off in around three weeks. Then it came to Freelight. The evac failed here too, and no normal people are around. Just lurkers. Are we the last people of Freelight? What happened to the police, the military, the population in general? You'd think they'd send in more military forces, like maybe some Marines or something. Since Freelight and Starlight are in Canada, it was mostly Canadian soldiers. Of course our allies came, Marines, Navy Seals, S.A.S, but mostly Canadian. Why wasn't anyone else stepping up? That's their job. Something about all the things that's been happening seemed extremely off.
Of course, there's the voice that's been haunting me, too. A little girl. Says this is my second trial. I have to either find Jackie, or my brother, Miles. If I fail to find either one, he.. gets taken. To where? What'll happen to him? And can't I just find both!? After we see if Jackie was at Jared's, I thought to just go see if Miles was safe. Of course, there's the problem that I don't know where he is. Couldn't remember for the life of me if he came to Jared's, and he obviously wasn't in my house. Another thing.. why is there times where I can't control myself? This.. rage that keeps happening. If it wasn't for that rage, I wouldn't have fought that horde, and I wouldn't have punched Jared in the face. Regret.. it was almost all I was feeling.
We got to Jared's house easily. Door was closed. I thought it to be unlocked, and besides, Jackie probably wouldn't even lock it if she came back here. She'd know we would come. I turned the doorknob and attempted to push it, before Jared suddenly stopped me. "W-Wait! You remember how.. everyone got bit..? That one guy got bit, lost his shoulder, and looked pretty damn sick, what if the bite does that? I mean, why else would he be.. uh, 'alive'? Th-they could be like that.. besides.. listen." he said, putting his hand on my shoulder. As he told me to, I listened. Inside the house, a noise was heard. Moans.. shifting.. scratches. Oh no. No.. "Holy ****. No. No way. We're not going in there. There's no way in HELL I'm gonna kill our god damn f.. families, even if it's not them.. even if it's for our own good." Ray said to both of us. "Mike, you better control yourself this time. We're not gonna go in there. Are you just gonna flip out again and kill them? Your PARENTS? Jackie can't be in there. It's. Not. Worth. It." he continued. I took a moment to think of what he said. I.. still thought we should go in there. To at least TRY to find Jackie. She could be in trouble for god's sake! Besides.. I'm sure the.. lurkers.. inside don't want to be like that. It might be good, in a weird way.. "Ray. I get what you mean. It doesn't seem like it's worth it, does it? But what if Jackie IS in there? She could be in a locked room or something. What if we just keep on searching Freelight and she was here all this time, what if she falls to them because we weren't there? I think it's worth a look. Also.. would you want to be one of those things? I.. I think.. the least we can do is take them out of their misery." I responded. Jared shook his head, but Ray thought about it for a minute.
"That's what you think we should do, man?" he asked. I nodded. My hand was still on the doorknob, I had just noticed. I glanced over at the door. "*sigh*.. You're insane. But.. fine. Let's just get it over with." he finally agreed. Jared simply stared in shock.

CHAPTER 11: THE FIRST HOUSE
August 31st 2081

The 22nd day of the infection
I took a short moment to realize what I was doing. Is.. this really what it's come to? The point that we're, "putting them out of their misery"? Them as in our parents? I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. "You guys ready?" I opened my eyes back up, and awaited their response. A nervous nod was what I got. "Well.. okay. L--"
"WAIT!"
"*sigh* Yes, Jared..?" Jared had stopped me from opening the door. He looked extremely.. scared, even though he had the mask on I could still tell. "Wh-why don't we try the back door? We really don't need to get their attention. Let's just.. not.. do that. Get their attention I mean. The backdoor is locked by a passcode, I know what it is." he spoke up. Huh, that'd be a way better idea actually. I nodded, and we walked through the alleyway.
The backyard of Jared's house was.. destroyed. A ripped hammock lay on the grass below it's holder, and a tipped over basketball hoop was right next to it in the ground. It seemed to definitely have visitors, footsteps in the dirt, patches of grass disturbed. Looks like the lurkers came through here. What led them to tipping over a basketball hoop though? Gah. Whatever. Jared and the rest of us walked to the back door after taking a moment to look at the backyard. We had came here so many times to play basketball, to just hang out and all. Kinda sucked to see it like this.
Jared started typing in the code to the door. I decided to watch it, just in case. Might need it again? 8-9-2-1. I kept a mental note of that. Jared put his hand on the doorknob and opened the door slowly. We all crouched down and walked in, closing the door behind us. We were in the kitchen. Lights were off.. was kinda dark, but the morning light still shined through. One small shelf was still open. Was empty. Could only assume that's where the cleaver came from. It was a very small kitchen, with two big shelves, and some smaller ones on top of it. One of which was the open shelf. The oven was right next to the big shelves. On the left to the shelves was the sink, garbage can and wall. The kitchen led right into an open hallway, with one room on our left, and stairs to the second floor and basement on the right.
Of course, the lurkers too. Two of them stood in the living room, doing their little slant-y thing, trying to walk around. They haven't noticed us from in the dark. They didn't seem to hear the door, or, I don't know, smell us. But considering how they didn't really seem in shape, quite literally, I'd assume their smelling senses aren't too great. Hell, or their sight. Although, I couldn't make out their faces or who they were either. Might be for the better..
The door on our left was a closet if I remember correctly. A small one. I slowly walked in front of Jared and Ray, taking the lead. I signaled for them to follow as I got to the closet. Every step on the hardwood floor making a sound. The door felt so far away.. we had to move slow, we couldn't make any noise and get them coming for us! We.. might have taken on an entire horde, but these two in such a closed in area might be a problem. Especially how they're family..
I put my hand on the doorknob, and signaled with my hand a countdown.
3..
2..
1..
Open.
I turned the knob and once again, slowly pushed the door open. Tons of outfits hung up on hangars lay in front of us. Again, it wasn't a big closet, and I could tell Jackie wasn't in here. I checked below the clothes for feet, but none. She definitely wasn't here. I frowned a bit, but stepped back to shut the door. The lurkers still haven't noticed us, and we still had the darkness to hide us. I turned away to the stairs, and signaled for Ray and Jared to follow once more. I took a step, thankfully these weren't hardwood, but carpet so we didn't have to worry about sound too much. I, of course, had my crowbar ready for anything still. The stairs turned around, after one small flight. We continued moving. The second floor.. it was dark, as well. No visible lurkers, at least not yet. I signaled for Jared to check his bedroom, Ray for the bathroom, and that I'd take a look on the balcony for lurkers.
I walked through the hallway to the balcony. It was a small one, but got the job done: looking over the living room. I wasn't too sure if it's good that it was small, though. I peeked around the corner as I got to the end of the hallway. And.. a lurker. I stepped back. One lone lurker stood at the wall, looking forward. I could get behind it, though. Alright, so, let's make a plan. I couldn't be too reckless about this, the other two lurkers are downstairs, and I don't want to alert any others on this floor. If I stab it with the back of my crowbar, it might be a bit more silent. And, if I maintain the element of surprise, I can easily take it out without struggle. Okay.. let's do this, I thought. I took a deep breath, and twirled the crowbar around. Thankfully the blood had dried off it, for the most part anyway. Still crouched, I walked behind it. I stood up, and walked slightly to the side, so I have a good vision of its head and the wall behind it. "..Rest in peace." I whispered, and thrusted the crowbar forward. It made contact with the insides of its head easily, and after a short squishy sound, the lurker fell limp. I took another deep breath, and pulled the crowbar out. I felt like I was about to throw up.. I had just noticed the smell in the house. It was almost even worse than that horde! Goes to show you what small spaces can do..
Suddenly, something shiny on what seems to be a belt on the lurker catches my eye. Hmm.. what's this? I crouched down and got a better look at it.
"Wellll, hello conveniently placed handgun.."

CHAPTER 12: INTERRUPTED
August 31st 2081
The 22nd day of the infection
***
The investigation turned up sour for the most part. After searching the rooms of Jared's house, we just walked out through the back. We all ended up having to kill at least one of the lurkers. But, Jackie wasn't there, and as soon as we noticed we just got the hell out of there. Although, there was one.. kinda good thing about it- the lurker I had killed on the balcony was a police officer. He was Jackie's father, though. I found it odd that he came here instead of helping with the evac, but I'd assume he just wanted to be with his family. I would've done the same if I were in his shoes. And, he had his utility belt with him. Inside was a loaded pistol. I took it without hesitating.. thought it might come in handy. My brother had taught me a bit on how to use guns, in fact, I was supposed to join the army in a few years had this not have happened! He had a few of his own and he mostly shown me a certain pistol, so I don't shoot my eye out or something with the bigger weapons I believe he said. I had gotten pretty good with it. It was a standard sidearm, a self defense and police one, he had told me. A Walther P22. It holds up to ten rounds, and has been around for longer than he could remember. I seen why, it didn't jump back much when you shot it, and without any muzzle attachments it wasn't too loud. And, the gun I had found, was, a Walther P22.. I already had experience with this pistol. Which was awesome. It had nine rounds in it, but the man didn't have any other magazines on him. Or clips, I never could remember the difference..
We were back at my house, and it was 10:30am. Still had a lot more time to the day. We could continue searching, for sure. But right now we were just back at home, taking a moment. Jared had taken a pair of clothes from his room while he was in there, and had changed back here. Now we have to check Ray's house, and Jackie's house, also we had to find my brother.. I didn't know where he was, though. We had took a quick look in the basement too, and he wasn't there. He'd either be at Jared's or my place. I was getting a bit worried.. where would we find him? The three of us had no idea where to look. He liked to eat at this pizza place, uh, "Hut of Pizza" or something stupid like that, but he wouldn't go there. We, of course, had random conversations of "what would you do in a zombie apocalypse?", because who hasn't, and he says that he'd hole up in a big mall I believe. It was a pretty good plan, after boarding up the exits and taking care of any infected inside if there were any, it'd be a nice place to stay. Literally everything and then some is there. I'm just wondering if he'd follow through with that plan.. it's probably our best bet actually, sadly. Probably not worth it though, would be pretty damn dangerous.
We had decided to just go to Ray's place, as it was the closest to us of our options. The chance of Jackie or my brother being there are very low, but Ray insisted we go anyways. We didn't argue, of course, that'd just.. well honestly it'd be rude. It IS his house after all. After we're finished there, we had to find a mode of transportation, a few bikes or something, maybe even a car, and get to Jackie's. Her house was really far from us, but we thought she might've wanted to just get back to her place after the horde. Dammit.. I still couldn't believe I thought it was a good idea to fight the horde. May have lost one of our friends and well, God knows where Miles was.
***
And finally, we got out and went on our way to Ray's house. It was probably about 11:30, we had left around ten after eleven and have been walking for a little while now. But, we were almost there. I had the crowbar in my hand, and the pistol was in my pocket. The walk was pretty much the same as the first one, uneventful and lurkers stayed to themselves. I wondered what their deal was.. do they only attack at night? Are they even hostile? Maybe if we just leave them alone and not make the first attack they won't do anything. Really, I started to kinda get used to them. Other than the fact that their faces tend to look like they could fall off any second, and that damn smell, they.. they had this massive body odor. I guess it's related to their skin being rotten to the bone, then the bones getting rotten, and after the infection takes place and gets all inside everything it just kinda happens and lets out.
....Where the hell did that come from? As soon as I thought that I almost threw up right on the spot there. I hope thoughts like that doesn't become common, oh god that's gross. It led me to start jogging a bit to speed this walk up. Ray and Jared picked up on this and started jogging as well. For some reason they didn't question me, but, whatever.
My thoughts were soon interrupted by a distant sound entering our ears as we came up to a corner on another T-intersection. We were on the right side, and the sound seemed to be coming from around that corner. The three of us immediately took cover against the wall of a building on the corner. It sounded like a heavy rumbling. A familiar sound.. one I haven't heard in a few days.
Cars.

CHAPTER 13: CONTACT
August 31st 2081
The 22nd day of the infection
Cars.. what could this mean? Can the lurkers drive cars? I didn't think so, they seemed pretty stupid for the most part. Maybe it's the military, I thought. They might be actually doing the evacuation now! I.. smiled, for the first time in a little while. So did Jared. He must've been thinking the same thing. Except for Ray.. he had this look of horror on his face. He walked to the glass door of the building we were up against, and opened it with ease. I guess they were still open. He motioned with his hand for us to follow as he walked in, crouched. Trying not to make noise. Why was he doing that? We walked through the door together anyway, confused. The building was dark, all lights off. I couldn't see much other than the front, where the sunlight shone through a large window near the door. The light illuminated a table up against the window, one chair on the far side, and one nearby the entrance. Two halfway filled mugs lay on the table, and I could only assume it was either coffee or tea. Or, well, both. The smell of these drinks filled the air. Must have been a cafe.
The three of us crouched down and looked out the window at what was approaching. Sure enough.. we were right. Three vehicles turned the corner and started to drive down the street slowly. These were't normal cars, though. From what I could tell, they were military humvees. Looked full, hell, even a soldier up on the mounted guns. Which was good! Yes! The evacuation! Jared and I immediately stood up and grabbed the handle to the door. But just then.. I noticed something. These humvees were painted black. The windows were tinted black, and the visible soldiers wore extremely heavy armor.. all black. They donned a huge helmet, entirely covered in the same slick black paint as the humvees. Didn't look much like the Canadian soldiers, or even the U.S ones either. Although, I didn't really know much about this stuff just yet, so I just brushed it off to be an elite squad or something. We opened the door and walked out, getting the attention of the soldiers. Ray followed right behind, looking a bit concerned.
Screeeeeech!
"HANDS UP NOW!"
Well, didn't expect that. All three humvees stopped as soon as we left the cafe, and soldiers exited their vehicles and.. before we knew it, the barrels of several rifles were in our faces. God dammit.. I cursed under my breath, but put up my hands anyway. Jared and Ray doing so as well. One soldier started inspecting us, patting us down, taking away our weapons. Once again, cursed under my breath. No one protested though, we knew better than that. The same soldier looked back to another, and nodded. He chuckled, and the second soldier pulled out a radio from his belt.
"Overlord, this is Alpha-Two. We have secured the package, ready for extract, over."
"Yes.. it is time. Get to the LZ.. I will have Foxtrot over in just a moment.. heh heh heh.. he has no idea what he's getting into.. Good job, Alpha-Two. Over and out.." a familiar, raspy, female voice responded.
No.. no, wait. That couldn't be..
No, it was.. it was her voice. The girl! The voice that has been driving me crazy! The one that almost gotten my friends and I killed multiple times! There was no mistaking it! I.. I started to feel it again though.. the anger. I started counting soldiers. Four at 10 o'clock.. two at 12 o'clock.. three behind them.. five at 3 o'clock.. five behind them, two of them on .50 cal's.. Twenty-one soldiers. Four on my left, two in front with three behind them, five to my right, another five behind them, two of which are on the .50 caliber machine guns on the humvees. I'm not sure why I knew that it was .50 cal's, but I just did. Okay.. okay.. I've played enough video games to know how to do--
Nevermind. As soon as I started planning our escape, our arms were tied behind our backs and we were being lead to the black humvees. They threw us in the trunks of each one and just left us there for a bit. That really did not go as well as I expected.

CHAPTER 14: MEETING
August 31st 2081

The 22nd day of the infection
Vrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
Fwopfwopfwopfwopfwopfwopfwop...
"Overlord! This is Foxtrot-Actual. Jackson here's bein' an ***, can you shut him up? Over."
"I- Wh- What the hell!? I'm just saying man, the sign said--"
"*sigh* Corporal Jackson. What is this about? Over."
"I swear a little while back there was this sign--"
"THAT SAID WE'RE GOING THE RIGHT WAY!"
"LET ME FINI--"
"Shut the hell up you two. You're acting like first graders. I thought I recruited men, not babies. By the way, I'm tracking you now, you're on the right track. This is Overlord, over and out.."
So, this is what I've been hearing for the past.. I dunno, ten goddamn hours. After driving around a bit in the humvees, we got put in some helicopters. Of course, all black. Now, this was my first time riding in a helicopter, so I was actually sort of excited. ..Then I remembered that this must not be the army that's evacuating us, considering that voice was on the radio. I kinda just slept for a bit instead of enjoying it. So, after being rudely thrown in, beaten up a bit, we took off to the skies and this 'Foxtrot-Actual' and 'Jackson' have been arguing for a long while.. apparently we might have went the wrong way, but Foxtrot-Actual begs to differ. And so does 'Overlord'. I've been thinking the whole way through, not like "Oh man, why is there zombies" kinda thinking, although the thought did come to mind, but.. trying to piece together this puzzle. I'm probably going to meet this Overlord, or the voice, and talk about.. things. Well, I'm going to try out this gun out with little Overlord's help, as soon as I get the chance. Except I kinda don't have it, they took it. I've just been wondering, why am I already being taken to Overlord? Why are WE being taken to Overlord? I haven't even gotten a chance to start the.. second trial or whatever. I hoped Jackie was okay.. wait.. ****, what if they took her too? I realized, they could have found Jackie already and taken her. That'd be.. bad. They probably took Miles too, I thought. After realized these unpleasant things, I just slumped back in my chair and groaned.. loudly. Then had someone put their gun in my face again. Oh yeah, there's a few soldiers up here..
-*--*--*-
September 1st 2081, 12:25am

The 23rd day of the infection
After some more hours, we FINALLY landed at.. the place they were taking us. It was impressive to say the least. It looked like a large stone prison. Four towers went high to the skies at each corner, and grey cracked stone walls connected each other. One wall had a large gate, closed. They did open it for the humvees, but we landed on the roof, so we didn't need to be taken through there. Inside the walls, was the actual structure. The roof alone was HUGE! There was two, not one, but two helipads side-by-side at one end, slightly above the roof, connecting by two stairs. Which made sense, considering there were, well, two helicopters in the air. After the soldiers opened the door, and rudely thrown us out again, we got a closer look at the rest of this roof. Some lights lay on the edges, they kinda looked like small streetlights. The ground was just like the outer walls, cracked cobble. It wasn't bad to the point where it would just fall in or something, but it didn't look too great. A glass double-door and some more stone around it sat at the other end. Aaaand, it was an elevator. Once we walked down the stairs from the helipad, we just ended up getting shoved our way in there. Which kinda sucked. I'm gonna have some back pains after this, I thought.
Four soldiers, all armed with what I think is an M4A2 rifle, of which is the new rifle of choice from what I hear, me, Ray, and Jared all stood in the elevator as we went down to the ground level. No one spoke a word. At least.. none of us in the elevator. A certain voice was heard.. but only to me.
"It's almost time.."
The voice.. no, not now! I almost fell to my knees again, but I caught myself. I just have to resist.. if I were to bother these guys right about now I'd probably get shoved some more. Most likely shot a few times. I took a deep breath, but my vision started to get blurry all of a sudden. I could only barely make out what was in front of me. Okay, that's fine, I don't need to see, if I remember correctly Ray was just right in front of me. But, to make things even worse.. slowly.. I got dizzy. No.. no, I have to keep my balance! I immediately tried to lean against what I thought was the wall. Sure enough, it was. ..I think. At this point, it felt as if my head was spinning, yet I was lightheaded at the same time. I couldn't think correctly whatsoever. My hearing started to let out, and everything around me started.. fading.. to black?
***
"Here's the package, Overlord. He's asleep, he just passed out in the elevator. I already threw his friends in some cells. Have fun, Overlord.."
Sometime later, I felt myself waking up. I took a quick deep breath, and slowly got my eyes open. I seemed to be sitting down on something.. except the entire room was completely pitch black. I was on a chair, tied to it by ropes. At least, that's what I was thinking. I could tell it was a small room, and there was probably a table in front of me. Oh god.. I was in an interrogation room of some sort, I realized..
"Close guess. But not quite. Here is where you'll get your answers.. Connor."

CHAPTER 15: TALK
September 1st 2081
The 23rd day of the infection
I.. was a bit surprised at the least to hear this. Of course, it was the voice again. But.. it wasn't in my head. It's as if this person was actually.. there. In front of me. Hiding in the shadows, I thought.
"I guess you could say that."
Oh, and she can hear my thoughts. That's great. I felt a tiny bit more confident hearing this voice not being in my head.. I wasn't about to break down again. Thankfully. I had gotten quite tired of that. So, I cleared my throat, and looked directly ahead of me. The plan was to look this.. uh.. voice in the eyes.
"Oh come on, you and I both know you can't do that. That doesn't even make any sense."
..Right. I continued to look ahead anyway, and tried to think of my first question. Should I ask about the current situation or just.. everything? I then noticed something. She's kind of being.. friendly. Not talking me down, but talking more.. casually. But y'know, with that freaky voice. I shook my head, and started my first question. "..So who the hell are you? No.. what the hell are you?" I asked. Silence. The room was entirely silent. Not a single sound was heard, for several minutes.
"I can't answer that yet."
As soon as I heard that response, I was ready to get right up and throw this chair across the table immediately. Then I remembered I was kinda tied to it and couldn't move. So that didn't happen. "Wh-what do you mean you can't answer that, yet?" I asked, again. Once more, silence. It felt like it was just me and the darkness. I knew she could hear me, though. Kinda slow on the draw, it seemed.
"Exactly what it sounds like- I can't answer that yet. Perhaps you'll find out someday. Now.. please, stop with the idiotic questions. I'll allow you two more, then we can.. talk on better terms."
The voice answered. Well, not really. Turned down again. Okay.. two more. For all I knew, this could've been the only chance I get to find out what's going on. It had only been a few days, hell it hasn't been many more than 24 hours, but.. a lot of **** has really hit the fan. My brother is missing, my friends are too, the military is just plain gone, victims of an infection are walking around.. eating people apparently, there's a different army working for this voice that's been talking to me.. different.. army.. military gone.. crazy voice.. wait.
THAT'S IT!
I can't believe it took me so long. I was starting to realize what's happening. My brother.. missing. He was a soldier. He may not be on any deployments, or in general not doing much military work, but he was a soldier nonetheless. Part of the army. Actually, U.S Army. That's why he lives in America. And, this army, was gone. But we found black humvees, soldiers with M4's, seemingly corrupt for god's sake.. and the military was.. again, gone! Now, this voice is obviously capable of crazy things. It's probably a person. Somehow, she's able to talk to people inside minds, and.. well.. what if she took down the army, and made them her own? It was possible. It was entirely possible. But I had no evidence of this.. although it seemed so likely. She corrupted the U.S Army, probably the Canadian one too, and.. oh god, my brother.. he might be corrupted too! No.. not yet. This.. this is why she wanted Miles. She knew he was part of the military, and she wanted him to become one of her recruits. She wanted me to go on a wild goose chase, to try to find him. And while I'd do this.. she would just take Miles. Somehow. But then, that would seem as if I'm an obstacle. In her way of creating this mad army. How..? What is that about? Why would I keep her from taking my brother? Of course, I'd be pretty pissed about that and would try my *** off to get him back.. huh, I should be doing that right now.. gah, no time.. but there's no way I could be a block in her taking him. Also, she just plain took me before I got much time to start this.. trial. Right, the trials.. I wasn't sure what that was about, either. Except, that immediately reminded me of when I passed out, after fighting that horde, suddenly. She said I look like a fine.. warrior. What is that about?
"Sounds like you finally put two and two together.. while there's still some more questions anyways. Shoot, my friend."
I glared ahead of me. Yes.. I know what to ask. "Where is the military?" I said rather quickly. Wait hold on- it only just then hit me, she.. she ADMITTED IT! She.. holy ****. I was right. What I had thought was right?
"You seem so confused. Why yes.. yes, I guess I do have my own little army of mine. Next. Last one, Connor."
SHIIIIIIT. My supposed-to-be-somewhat-intimidating glare fell short. So she did it. Whoever this person was took down the military. The fall of the military. It.. it just happened. Under her control now. That is NOT good. Alright.. my last question. Miles.. I needed to know his condition. But I needed to know where my friends are. I need to know more about everything! This meeting isn't turning up very many answers. Although, even still.. I know what to ask.. this is more important. I stuttered a bit trying to say it- and ultimately stopped myself. This is my last chance to get answers! I have to make sure I know what I'm doing! I gritted my teeth, and closed my eyes. I gave it some more thought. Okay.. so my brother is most likely part of her army.. alright, well if he is, he will know not to do anything to me or my friends, right? Or.. ****! Who knows what he'll think! But if he's not part of the army.. then he could be just wandering, trying to survive or something, back in Freelight. That's gotta be it. Doesn't help any though.. I.. I still need to know how my friends are doing, too. Actually, they're probably being held somewhere, now that I think about it.. that would seem logical. I'd like to ask where exactly, but I'm not gonna get that answer. So.. yeah, I probably shouldn't waste this last question on them. God, I feel terrible saying-wait a minute.
Friends. Probably being held.
Jackie. Missing.
Not at either of the likely spots she'd be.
I have an idea of where she is already, but..
"Where.. the hell.. is Jackie?"
I glared ahead once again, barely talking through gritted teeth, and started to pull my arms. The idea was that I get out of this goddamn chair, at least by the time I get an answer. I wasn't exactly making any progress, but I had to do this. Wait.. can't she..
"..*sigh*. I can hear your thoughts, buddy. Just so you know, there's no way you're getting out of that, or this room, until I allow you to do such things. Also, you're kinda on camera. That security camera, which is up in the corner there, has a little night vision on it so.. we can all see you clearly. But now, to answer your quest--"
"THIS ENDS NOW! EVERYONE, FLASHLIGHTS!"
"You got it, Commander."

CHAPTER 16: OLD FRIENDS
September 1st 2081
The 23rd day of the infection
I knew that goddamn voice anywhere.
Of course, I heard this voice throughout almost all of my growing up.
I guess it was a friend of mine, although I never really talked to him much.
His name was Johnathon Barragan, and he was alongside a certain soldier, friend, brother.. by the name of Miles Kriesberg.
No.. no way!
After flashlights shone in through the doorway illuminating the room, I could finally see where I was. Of course, I was tied to a chair still. Sure enough, there was a table in front of me, and.. in front of me was what seemed humanoid. Someone stood in front of me, wearing a heavy brown cloak, and even with all the flashlights shining in, their face was covered by shadows. Long sleeves stretched down to the cloak's legs. Again.. brown. Belts and buttons lay in random spots all around it, and a lace tied together the hood. Hands or feet could not be seen, even if I did look around the table. Ripped holes also made their spot around the cloak. Overall, it looked very worned out. I didn't even pay attention to anything else in the room. This is it, this was the voice. But, as well...
"Holy mother of ****. Seriously, bro? Getting tied up in a chair? Please. You gotta do better than that." my.. brother spoke to me. My brother. He's.. he's okay, he's.. he's not trying to kill me right now! I couldn't exactly see him, but I knew he was there. He was right behind me. Oh my god, he's okay.. I could feel tears starting to form around my eyes. "General Kriesberg, you free the hostage. Everyone else, surround the enemy." I heard Johnathon speak, and the sounds of footsteps quickly moving around. "NO! HOW DID YOU ALL ESCAPE!?" the voice shrieked, and backed away. Heh, not so tough now, are ya. As soldiers, starting with Johnathon, surrounded her, a knife dug into the ropes tying me to the chair. Within just plainly a few seconds, the ropes fell to the floor and I could move freely. I stood up, took a quick stretch and turned around.. yeah.. yeah, this was him alright. This was Miles. He was wearing not all-black armor, but normal camoflague. With a Private insignia on his sleeve, the one triangle pointing downwards. And he's standing right here in front of me. It might've only been a few days, but, he could've been in danger, but he's here! I wrapped my arms around him and gave him the biggest hug I ever gave this guy. "Bro.. Connor.. god damn man, I can't even begin to explain how things have been recently. But I missed you, my man." he said, returning the hug. I.. I didn't even want to break it up. Till I heard another voice.
"Dude. We're like, right here."
My eyes widened at the sound of this other voice, it was.. Ray! I looked over Miles' shoulder, and seen three people, around my size. And one was female. Ray.. Jared.. and.. oh my god.. Jackie! They all stood next to each other in the doorway, smiles on their faces. Ho-oly ****! I ran over to them, not.. not sure how to do this. Screw it. I got all of them together and ended up in a big badass group hug. "You seem awfully huggy today." Ray said to me, although not really trying to escape. "Heh. I just got reuinited with my brother, and friends, and I thought I'd never see you guys again. I'm sure you wanted to group hug, too, jerk." I responded with a smile, but breaking it up anyway. I only then noticed their condition. Dirt engulfed their clothes, a number of marks on their heads.. they seemed okay, but didn't really look it. As I started to notice this.. we all heard screams from inside the room. ****! I completely forgot about that! I couldn't see, though. I had my back to the room. But.. only one certain scream was what I heard before I learned the consequences of that. "GUYS, MOOOVE!" Johnathon yelled, as a blinding.. light soon took over my vision. Within just a few moments.. I passed out again.

EPILOGUE

The crackling of fire is heard. The ringing of rounds ejected from heavy rifles could be heard from miles away. Soldiers yelling, shouting commands. The suppressive fire is just barely holding the enemy back. Our friends could be winning. But they might not, at the same time. Because they know, there's only one way to come up on top. It's not tactics. It's not sheer strength. And it definitely isn't retreating. Something that's quite rare in fact, rare to the point where only two of the holders fight this faithful night. One is part of the opposing forces. One is part of our allies. They fight.. they fight to see who will win. But is it a fight to the death? Possibly not. But possibly so. These thoughts linger throughout the minds of the Resistance. They do not know what to fight for. But.. what they do know is they aren't dying tonight.
