CHAPTER 10: RISE FROM THE ASHES PT. 3
Sarge fell over, as the bullet rang throughout our ears. I checked rounds. "4 bullets left.." I said aloud. Frank turned around to see Sarge.. and me, holding the gun. We just.. stared, for a few minutes. "He was a good guy, you know? He yelled at us and whatnot but.. damn, what I'd give up to have him stay alive.." Frank said with a tear in his eye. He turned back around and started walking away. I looked over to my wife and daughter and signaled for them to come over as I started following Frank. "We're gonna find them. These... these voices. I'm hearing them too sometimes, man. But we will find them and we will kill them. I want to see them dead. They need to be PUNISHED, Miles, and I want to see it happen. It will." Frank said to me as I caught up. I had to agree.. I can't deal with this anymore. They need to know what they did wasn't right. There wasn't reason to this, was there. Just messed up minds working together to destroy us all. My family finally caught up. "Daddy..! What happened to that man?" Lilly asked me as we just continued walking. "Lilly.. don't worry about him. He was sick.. and he was about to turn into one of those things you see walking around. We can't let that happen.." I told her. We kept on walking. We found another light, and it showed we were getting to a corner of the building. "Emma, Lilly, stay here. Frank and I will check around here, and see if there's anything." I whispered. I readied my revolver, and Frank got into a CQC position with his knife. I went first with Frank right behind me. We slowly went around.. and came back to the corner. "Well then." Frank said aloud. We seen something big.. and we couldn't go back. We can't. "What did you guys see?" Emma asked me. I took a deep breath and went to tell her. "It was some sort of fire. It looked like a.. square fire, of some sort. Up in the air. Two people were inside of it.. One was a guy, about 16 years old probably. The other was a little girl.. most likely 8. She looked infected.. but far worse than anything we seen already. The dude looked infected, yeah, but not as much.. definitely not as much." I replied.
"Yeah. You know who they were, right?" Frank asked me. I nodded. It was Billy and Liz, waiting for us.. in this flame thing. We're about to get ready for the final battle. I took another deep breath. "Lilly. Emma. Stay the hell here. If you move, if you go around this corner, or leave this area you will DIE. Lilly, I didn't want to say that.. but it's true. Stay close to your mother and do not wander off. Only move if it is 100% necessary." I told my family. Frank looked at me with a concerned look. "Bro, how are we gonna kill these guys? We got a revolver with four bullets and I got a little knife that Billy forgot to take. They have superpowers for god's sake, and they are protected in that little flame thing." Frank asked. He had a point, how will we do anything? Any kind of damage? It's not like we can walk up to them and tell them to stop. We're gonna walk into a death trap, I finally realized.. I looked back over to my family. "I don't know what's about to happen. I don't even know if we'll make it out of here alive. I just want you two to know.. I love you. And I want you both to survive. If you have to leave, don't come back for us. I am so, so sorry.." I started to say to them. I started getting a tear in my eye. Dammit, this isn't the time.. Emma came up and hugged me. "Miles.. be safe. I know you can make it out of there. Do what you have to. You can live.. do it for that soldier over there. For your family.." she told me. Lilly joined in on the hug too. "I love you too, Daddy.." Lilly spoke to me. Frank stood beside us, and looked in deep thought. He must have been thinking of what we do next.. and I had to think too. I walked over to him. "Miles. W-What do we do? Do we just walk right in there? These weapons aren't gonna do crap. Nothing." Frank asked me. I thought.. and that's our only choice. To walk right in there and hope for the best. "Yes. Yes we do. Come on. Let's go!" I replied, and walked around the corner with confidence. "M-Miles!" Frank said from around the corner.
He followed me in, and we walked. Toward Billy and Liz. They were looking straight at me.. not both of us, just me. We got closer to their flame shield thing. It was getting quite hot.. which makes sense, I guess. "Miles.. we were expecting you." Liz spoke. Frank and I stopped walking. "Liz. It's about time we found you." I replied. They had this death stare.. felt like they were staring into my soul. "So what is it? What the hell do you want? Why have you been putting us through all this? It's not John. You heartless pieces of crap wouldn't even care if he stole from places, or murdered. It's nothing to you. What is it about him? Is it even him at ALL? If it was John you wanted.. why would you start a worldwide virus, that's killing everyone!? When John destroyed your necklace, you died in some way. Then you came back, and now you can do all this, why!? Why did you come back, what made that happen!? Who is giving you these powers!? I will not stand for secrets anymore. I will hear what is going on. One of you are gonna explain, right NOW!" I yelled. I was done. I was fed up with secrets, and I want to know answers. My questions have been asked.. I only want to know the answers. They were quiet, however. No response. We stood there in wait.. but nothing happened.. "Are you just gonna stand.. er, fly there? And stare at me? Not gonna do anything?" I asked. But.. they continued to stare, at me. And refused to do anything, it seems. "I lost so much... so much. He's not the only one that's messed up in ways right now. I came in with MY FAMILY. I lived in that town and so did my family. In case you haven't noticed THEY AREN'T WITH ME, ARE THEY! At the hotel.. when everything just went down, my family.. my wife, my daughter, my brother, my father, were, guess what? Part of the victims.. they got BITTEN. I had to shoot them. All of them. Do you know.. how that feels? To have NO OTHER CHOICE, THEN TO SHOOT YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY!? NO! YOU DON'T! You had it easy, you lost a picture of your parents, you didn't have to shoot them in the head! Because of you, everything is over for me. I have nothing more to lose." Frank started yelling as well. I.. didn't know that. I did not know about that.. When the infected hit, I was out trying to defend. I ran out of ammo. I heard a request for ammo from someone else over the radio. I soon knew we weren't gonna do anything.. I ran. I got out of there. I left my squad, I left everyone and I went back to base. It was cowardly of me.. but there was almost no other choice. I didn't know what happened.. they returned about a day later. I was almost shot in the head for leaving..
"That's messed up. It really is. You guys ready to do something about that?" I suddenly heard a voice behind me. And.. helicopter blades? I turned around. And.. there was a god damn helicopter..! "What the f-- I-- Where did you come from!?" Frank asked. But it wasn't an enemy helicopter.. through the open door, soldiers were there! Delta, rest of Alpha, and even a few members of Bravo.. but there was one that stood out. It was John. "JOHN!" Billy and Liz screamed, and jumped out from their fire shield. "GET OUT OF THE WAY!" I yelled, and jumped back. John jumped down from the helicopter. "DO YOUR MAGIC, JOHN!" Texas, the leader of Bravo yelled. John, Billy and Liz all started running toward each other..
"I've been waiting for this.."

The helicopter's members raised the miniguns. Other soldiers stood behind, eyes through the sights. "YOU TWO DOWN THERE! GET BACK!" Texas yelled out. Needless to say, we started running back around the corner. What the hell is happening..! "M-Miles!! Who the hell are they!? How'd they find us!?" Emma asked as soon as I got back. "Th-they're military but--" I started to explain but suddenly.. a burst of light and screaming came. Everyone stood perfectly still.. "ALMOST.. DONE..!" I heard John yell. I peeked around the corner. I couldn't even see.. the light was too blinding. "AAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" John let out a ear splitting scream. "Oh god.. we should probably back up.." Frank suggested. I agreed. We all moved, in wonder of what is happening. John must be putting up one hell of a fight.. or.. oh man, what if he has powers now! "FIIIREEEEEEE---" John suddenly yelled out, but trailed off. The intense light wasn't seen, and bullets were firing. "Frank, come on, let's go!" I told Frank. I ran in. The chopper was shooting at Billy and Liz.. they were on the ground, and they looked.. defeated! John was next to them, eyes closed. "IT'S 'BOUT TIME WE GOT TO DO THAT! Haha, alright!!" Texas yelled, as the helicopter landed. "Texas! Where.. where has Bravo been? I thought Bravo was freakin' dead. And.. how did you find us?" Frank greeted Texas. "For ya first question, we weren't dead! Just missin' in action, for a long time. I'd rather not go into tha details if you get ma drift. About your second question, well.. you guys were missin' a long time. It's like, December 30th now. You were gone on.. the 2nd I think. Since then we've been looking for ya.. and we did some searching. Lots of it. That's when your mates from Delta found us. We continued our search and Alpha brought up how you were in the future. So we thought 'hey maybe there's something at the base!' and there was! We all went together, and before we knew it, we got knocked on the back of the head. When we woke up, we were in some room with a computer, and papers or somethin'.. They said you were here, and there's no way to get ya out! But, there was pictures of the place and everything for some reason, and I realized 'hey this looks familiar!' and we came. In a helicopter. At a very convenient time, it seems." Texas said to us. Apparently he seen the room too.. I wonder if he seen 2040, like I did. But something seemed off, about what he said.
"December 30th? Are you sure? We were told it's only December 8th.." I asked Texas. It can't be the end of the month already when it just started. "Nope.. 30th. You didn't BELIEVE these two did ya? They're god damn liars as well, most likely!" he replied. Guess he had a point- why would they be truthful with us? "So what just happened? We're trying to escape and out of nowhere John comes and he's screaming and everyone's dead and.. I don't even know!" Frank asked him. Yeah, I wanted to know about this too. I guess if it's the 30th now they had time to develop the cure and save John.. but I don't know if the cure is complete. "Yea.. we had a while, as you can see. We took Dr. Red and made him save John. He also finished up a bit of the cure, but that was before he went and died. Got infected. We all are. Just waiting for it to start takin' effect. So we woke up John and Liz came, and she was all 'we want John!' and then some crazy crap started happening, and Liz did something to John.. except I don't know what it was. When Liz left, he went into a small coma. When he woke up, he had powers too. I don't know what Billy and Liz were planning, but whatever it was, it gave John powers and helped the student defeat the master, if you get what I'm sayin'. So anyway, John used his powers to get rid of THEIR powers, and we added the final touch." Texas replied to Frank. I had to think.. and I think I have the answers to everything.
Liz died, about 8 years ago. Or 7. It was when John broke her necklace, I know that. For a reason we still haven't figured out yet, she came back to life as a God, and had the powers to destroy the world. Being so young, she didn't know what to do. With barely any effort she could kill us all. But that was the thing, the powers made her evil, I guess. It got rid of all the good she had in her and made her have more of an evil intent than she ever had before. Liz decided to find John, and do something about him since he destroyed the one memory she had of her parents. So she went to the town John lived in and noticed some things about him, like his best friend, Billy. He had a certain family, with scientists in it that could do just about anything. So she told them to start developing the infection, and probably blackmailed them in a way. Being so young, she didn't know she could just make something like this happen with her powers. Liz wanted to start the infection because since she was now evil from the powers or whatever, and thought to well, kill everything.. and no one would know why this happened, or who started it. Now, we fast forward eight years. It is now 2020, November. The virus is complete to spread worldwide. In return, Liz gave Billy powers.. but he could control it. He was like 18 at this point I think. He was immature, but could control. The evil intent was most likely there.. but Billy didn't do anything with it. He was still a good person. He started getting evil by the time he first tried to kill Liz. When he used his powers. He realized what he can do with them.. and it started to kick in. Next thing we know, he's Liz's partner in crime in taking down the world.
"I know what's been going on. I have my answers. I can explain, I'll do it right now." I started saying. My family came over, and heard what we were talking about. I explained to everyone my thoughts. I have no proof that this is what happened, but it seemed the most likely. Everyone nodded and seemed to agree. "That may be what happened.. we now have our answers it seems. Now we just have to do what comes next, Miles. We'll continue to do what we were doin'. Which is saving us all. The cure isn't finished yet. There's only three vials, meaning only three of us can get cured. If you turn around, there looks like there's a jet or something over there. Our chopper's out of gas, and that jet holds up to 4 people. There's way more than 4 of us here. I want you to go, though. Take your family, and Frank, you guys should go together. To the shelter. Here's a map we had to make, just follow that and you should be on your way." Shaun from Delta came over and handed me a map. I took a careful look at it. Yes.. this should help us. "Go to our shelter. Take the vials and use them, but make sure you choose the right people of you four to take it. Because one of you won't be able to have the cure, but I want Frank with you on this. And what was it.. 2040? I think that'll be the next time we get to do somethin'. I am really not sure of what's going on still, but.. stay safe. For.. well, 20 years. Maybe we will meet again, Miles. Until then.. peace, dude." Shaun told us. We all waved, and walked over to the jet. Thankfully, I know how to fly this stuff, I was taught this in the military. Except I don't know if this jet is gonna be different. The runway was pretty long, longer than what I seen before. Lights filled up the runway, in order for us to see obviously. There were stairs leading up to the cockpit, and I walked up them and opened the window with ease. I helped everyone up, and let Frank sit next to me. Emma and Lilly sat in the seats behind me, and I closed the window. "Alright. So we just gotta follow this map, and we're set. The map shows the way pretty clear. You guys ready to fly?" I said behind me. "I'm ready!" Lilly spoke. "I'm usually not up for flights.. but let's do it." Emma replied to me. "You know it. Let's get outta here." Frank said.
"Alright. Let's fly."

Our chopper's out of gas, and that jet holds up to 4 people. There's way more than 4 of us here. I want you to go, though. Take your family, and Frank, you guys should go together. To the shelter. Here's a map we had to make, just follow that and you should be on your way." Shaun from Delta came over and handed me a map. I took a careful look at it. Yes.. this should help us. "Go to our shelter. Take the vials and use them, but make sure you choose the right people of you four to take it. Because one of you won't be able to have the cure, but I want Frank with you on this. And what was it.. 2040? I think that'll be the next time we get to do somethin'. I am really not sure of what's going on still, but.. stay safe. For.. well, 20 years. Maybe we will meet again, Miles. Until then.. peace, dude." Shaun told us. We all waved, and walked over to the jet. Thankfully, I know how to fly this stuff, I was taught this in the military. Except I don't know if this jet is gonna be different. The runway was pretty long, longer than what I seen before. Lights filled up the runway, in order for us to see obviously. There were stairs leading up to the cockpit, and I walked up them and opened the window with ease. I helped everyone up, and let Frank sit next to me. Emma and Lilly sat in the seats behind me, and I closed the window. "Alright. So we just gotta follow this map, and we're set. The map shows the way pretty clear. You guys ready to fly?" I said behind me. "I'm ready!" Lilly spoke. "I'm usually not up for flights.. but let's do it." Emma replied to me. "You know it. Let's get outta here." Frank said.
"Alright. Let's fly."
EPILOGUE
We got to the shelter safely. There was some flat land for us to land on, but we still had to walk up to the shelter. We all stood here in Dr. Red's tent, looking upon the table, with the cure. 3 vials lay there, waiting to be used. Gas masks were next to the table. About seven of them. "We can cure ourselves and use the gas masks so we don't get infected again." I said aloud. Everyone nodded. "Yeah. We just need to figure out who takes the cures, first." Emma responded. She was right, that's more important right now. I grabbed one of the vials and looked at it. "It's a needle I think.. we just inject it into ourselves and we're cured, I guess." I said to everyone. I wasn't sure who should take it. I looked at everyone and had to think. "Miles, you're the smartest one here. I'm sure you can decide who takes it, right?" Frank told me. Yes.. I have to decide. "I'll take the first one. I am apparently needed in 2040." I spoke. No instructions were given, I had no idea how to do this.. I put it to my leg, and pushed it in. The needle quickly injected it's contents into me.. the cure. I took a deep breath. My leg started to feel weird.. then my entire body. "Oof. This definitely has a kick in it, heh." I said with a laugh. The feeling was now gone, and the needle empty. I threw it on the ground. We won't need that one anymore. I picked up another one, and looked at everyone. I looked at Lilly. "Lilly.. I can't risk losing you again. After being in the army, I missed you so much. You are very smart, and can handle yourself. Even in rough situations like right now. I have to be somewhere in around twenty years.. and those bad people will still be around. I want you to come with me. It might be dangerous. But by then, I will teach you how to defend yourself. You just need to take this needle.. and you will be safe. You won't turn into one of those people if you take it. It's like your flu shot, except much more important. Lilly, do you want to take it?" I asked her. I felt I needed her. I don't know if it is a good idea to take her, but I want to at least have my daughter with me till the year 2040. "Yes. I will take it, Daddy!" She replied after a bit of thought. I nodded. "Let me see your arm." I told Lilly. She pulled up her sleeve and showed me it. I readied the needle. "You might feel a bit of a pinch, but don't worry. 3, 2, 1!" I said to her, and injected the cure. "Ah!" She shouted a bit in surprise. "Shh.. okay, you're okay now. It will all be okay." I tried to comfort her. We don't need her scared right now, I need her to be brave. After a few seconds, Lilly started standing still and was doing alright. "I'm safe now, Daddy?" she asked me. I nodded with a smile.
One more. I picked up the vial and looked at Frank and Emma. It's one of them. My best friend from the military or my wife.. "Miles. I know you're considering it, but don't. Don't give me it, your wife deserves it more than I do. When you got stabbed... I helped move your body. And I didn't even feel too.. bad, about it." Frank admitted. He didn't care.. well, that solves who I'm giving the cure then. "St-stabbed!?" Emma asked. "Emma, don't worry about it. I'm fine. But.. someone here is taking the cure. Frank... sigh.. it's not you. In case you didn't know, I don't like getting stabbed only so afterwards my friend will just not care. Emma, you will be taking the cure. Emma.. do you want to take the cure?" I asked. Frank stepped back. My wife nodded, and pulled up her sleeve. "..I understand, Miles." Frank finally replied to me. I readied the needle. "3, 2, 1." I counted down and injected the needle. Emma took a deep breath, and sat on Dr. Red's bed. "Ahh.. yeah, this does have a kick." Emma said. After a little bit she stood up. "Well, then there we go. Now, we just gotta.. survive until 2040. That's a long time from now. Lilly, you'd be 28 years old by then!" I tried to lighten the mood a bit. "I-is that old?" Lilly asked me. "Haha, no.. I would be, though. I'll be 52 years old." I said. It's weird, thinking that to be honest.. but, I guess that's our objective for now.
The road to 2040 has started.
