    It is "chat" like a Facebook status would be, a sort of mini-conversation in public. It works the same way as Visitor Messaging would with other forum softwares.

    To privately chat with multiple people, they would use their Inbox...

    I would prefer something like Shoutbox in IPB/phpbb2 or mChat in phpbb3...see http://enterbf3.com/forum for an example. Another option can be IRC but that is less efficient. We can also try cometchat.
